HISTORY OF SERRA IN THAILAND

Serra history in Thailand, from the chartering of the first Serra club in 1982, reflects the vibrancy of the local Church

Serra history in Thailand, from the chartering of the first Serra club in 1982, reflects the vibrancy of the local Church. In 1998 two new clubs in the northeast made Thailand the first country to have Serra clubs in every diocese.

In early 1980, PIME Fr. Joseph Clara brought an enthusiastic group of Serrans from Hong Kong to Bangkok, where they met with Fr. Joseph Somsak Thirasak of Conception Church.

In May of that year Fr. Somsak introduced Serra to a group of lay people in Bangkok. They organized the first Serra club in Thailand and, on 1 November 1980, Paul Mary Suvij Suvaruchiporn was elected president with Fr. Somsak as chaplain.

In May 1982 his Eminence Cardinal Michael Michai Kitbunchu officiated at the charter ceremony at Holy Redeemer Church in Bangkok to start the first Serra club in Thailand: the Serra Club of Bangkok, with 34 founding members.

Just three years later another club was formed at Saint John's College in Bangkok. It was chartered on May 8, 1987, with Chainarong Monthienvichienchai as the first president, Fr. Bancha Sripramong as the chaplain and 24 founding members.

In 1987 the first Serra club outside of Bangkok was formed in Chiangmai in the north during the visit of Francis J. McKeon, Jr., Serra International president (1986-1987). The Serra Club of Chiangmai was chartered in October 1989 with 22 founding members.

The Serra Club of Ratchaburi in the west was chartered in 1992, and the Serra Club of Chantaburi in the east in 1993. Two years later, in 1995, another three clubs were chartered: the Serra Club of Mother Perpetual Help in Udonthani, the Serra Club of St. Ann Cathedral in Nakhonsawan and the Serra Club of Mother of Fatima in the south.

Serra clubs were then chartered in the northeast in the country's three remaining dioceses: the Serra Club of Ubonrachatani in 1997, the Serra Club of Nakornratchasima in 1998 and the Serra Club of Tharae in 1998. With these, Thailand became the first country to have Serra clubs in every diocese.

The Serra Club of Banpong in the south was chartered by SI President George Damiani in April 2001.  The Young Serra Club of Nakornratchasima in the northeast was formed on June 9, 2001 and hope to apply for the charter later in 2001.

Local Serrans however do not limit their efforts to Thailand. As part of Jubilee 2000, Bangkok members visited Myitkyina Diocese in May 2000 to form the first Serra club in Myanmar (formerly Burma), and on 1 January 2001 the Serra Club of Mytkyina was chartered by SI Trustee Chainarong Monthienvichienchai.

Visits have also been made in 2001 to Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore.  It is hoped that the Serra Club of Dhaka in Bangladesh will be chartered later in 2001.

Members of Thailand's Serra clubs work tirelessly with the local Church in a spirit of love to foster and affirm vocations, and the local ordinaries give them their unreserved support. Since 1997 the Episcopal Commission for Seminaries and Vocations, chaired by Cardinal Michael Michai Kitbunchu, has included a Serra representative in the commission.

Although Catholics account for only about 0.5 percent of Thailand's 60 million people, the country's ten dioceses are active and vibrant. History shows that there is close collaboration in Thailand between laypeople and the Church in promoting vocations.
